Our Beliefs

From the time of the Apostles to today, Christians have articulated doctrinal beliefs in brief, definitive statements. As those who know God, we believe it necessary to set forth in a concise fashion the fundamental truths that the Members of Goodwood Community Church believe. Goodwood Community Church’s Statement of Faith summarizes these essential Christian beliefs, demonstrates our unity with other believers in Christ, and guards our church from error.

SECTION 1 – WE ARE A “CHRISTIAN PEOPLE”

We are a Christ-centered church that is fully committed to the core teachings of the Old and New Testament Scriptures that Christians, in all places and at all times, have confessed throughout the ages. We believe that the Nicene Creed faithfully articulates many of these central truths of the Christian faith and, by affirming this creed, we demonstrate our unity through the Spirit with fellow saints through history and around the world.

SECTION 2 – WE ARE A “LOCAL CHURCH OF BAPTIZED BELIEVERS”

We are a local body of believers endeavoring to faithfully live out the truths of the gospel for the glory of God. To that end, the following statements explain how we understand and teach the Scriptures in the context of our local church.

While our church Statement of Faith is a good summary of what we believe together, our Church Covenant (below) is an outline of how we agree to live together as a committed community. Although it does not include every Biblical command, it’s a helpful reminder of what it means for us to live together as disciples of Christ.

OUR CHURCH COVENANT

By God’s grace, we are gathered as those who have repented and believed in the Lord Jesus Christ. Relying on his gracious aid, we do now solemnly and joyfully renew our covenant with each other.

We will work and pray for the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

We will walk together in love as Christ commands, caring for each other, watching over each other, and encouraging and admonishing one another when needed.

We will regularly attend the church’s gatherings and faithfully pray for one another.

We will endeavor to lead those in our care in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, as well as to seek the salvation of our family and friends.

We will rejoice at each other's happiness and bear each other's burdens and sorrows.

With God’s help, we will live carefully in the world, denying ungodliness and worldly desires.

We will work together to maintain a faithful gospel witness in our worship, sacraments, discipline, and doctrines. We will contribute cheerfully to the expenses of the church, the needs of our neighbors, and the spread of the gospel around the world.

If we leave this congregation, we will join another gospel-preaching church as soon as possible where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s Word.

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all. Amen.
